There is so much power in building a business in this way but so many people glorify “the leap” that they miss all the incredible opportunities right in front of them. When you have a full-time job as you build your “side hustle,” you can take bigger risks, make bigger investments and say no to unaligned clients with confidence because of that stability. Having guidance in those early years might have expedited my journey to full-time entrepreneurship, though I want to be clear that I don’t resent having taken the long road to get here. I realize now how ridiculous that sounds (and have since found an incredible community on Instagram), but that mentality and lack of connections early on made for a slow and clunky start. Those experiences taught me that I’d have better luck going it alone rather than building a community. I attended just about every design conference and networking opportunity available, and I was constantly met with bad attitudes and dismissal from those established in the industry.

When I first graduated from college and was trying to figure out how to make my entrepreneurial dreams a reality, I found very little support in my community. It wasn’t always as easy as it is now, but I don’t know a single entrepreneur who hasn’t had to learn at least a few lessons the hard way.
